 ABOUT ME

I studied painting and printmaking at college, gaining a B.A.in painting and a M.A. in Printmaking from The Royal College of Art.  I also have an H.N.D in Interior Design and a city and guilds from the London College of Furniture.

I have always continued my art whilst earning a living doing various things from printing fabric and producing shirts to making hats for Euro disney.

I was an upholsterer in London for about 13 years, with some of that time spent teaching upholstery and soft furnishing. I then moved on to restoring gilded mirror and picture frames and furniture and also producing bespoke gilded mirror and picture frames on commission.

I worked with Fox&Sharples making contemporary gilded frames for  artists and collectors, The Gilded Furniture Workshop, Elizabeth Ball a noted restorer of paintings and gilded items and Overmantles of Battersea.

I left London and moved to the south coast of England where I continued to work as a gilding restorer.
I moved to Wales 3 years ago with my two horses.

CONTEMPORARY GILDING

This is one of my contemporary mirror designs.
The frame is pine, coated in  layers of gesso which is sanded until completely smooth.
The surface is then given several layers of bole and water gilded
using using many different colours of gold leaf.

This mirror frame was brought to me in pieces with much of the ornamentation either missing or badly repaired and painted with a bronze powder paint
The frame was repaired, existing composition consolidated, poorly modelled repairs and bronze powder paint removed.New ornamentation modelled and casts produced in compo and attached.

It is now fully restored using an authentic composition recipe of whiting, rosin, linseed oil and animal glue to replace the missing ornamentation, boled in the original colour and
water gilded in 23kt gold leaf and toned to match the original gilding that still survived in some parts.
The frame was 29"x25" and the cost was  about £450
